This year, SEPTA held its eighth annual “Stop Hunger at Your Station” food drive. In only two weeks, nearly 15,500 pounds of food was collected which means 15,500 meals given to Philabundance and its member agencies. In addition to the incredible amount of food collected, there was a total of $9,000 raised that translates into 18,000 extra meals for residents served by this incredible organization. This year’s donations helped provide a total of 33,500 meals for children in the Greater Philadelphia region who are missing free or reduced-cost breakfasts and lunches while school is out.
“Every year, our rides and our employees go above and beyond to help Philabundance through the Stop Hunger at Your Station food drive,” said SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey D. Knueppel. During this year’s food drive held June 6th-20th, SEPTA received canned goods at 43 stations across the entire transit system. A specially wrapped “Stop Hunger at Your Station” SEPTA bus traversed the Philadelphia region collecting various items to add to the donations.
SEPTA customers and employees have gathered over 139,000 pounds of food since 2009, the first year of the food drive. Adding in monetary donations of approximately $53,000, over 245,000 meals have been provided for Philabundance. We can’t thank SEPTA riders and employees enough for the generosity shown last month and throughout the eight year history of the food drive!
