In honor of Earth Day, I wanted to share my trip to Drexel University’s EarthFest! EarthFest is an annual block party-style event that celebrates earth day and the University’s commitment to environmental sustainability. It also showcases University stakeholders, local businesses, and other organizations with “green” initiatives such as SEPTA!
SEPTA is not only committed to the riders we serve but also to the planet we operate on. Public Transportation inherently benefits the environment because it reduces the number of people driving single-occupancy vehicles. Buses, subways, and trolleys are almost always better than driving a car because the more people traveling in a vehicle, the smaller the carbon footprint of each person. By increasing ridership on public transportation, more fuel is conserved, traffic congestion decreases, air pollution decreases, and the region's carbon footprint is reduced.
For my trip to Drexel, I was accompanied by my coworker, Kevin, as we had many boxes to carry full of environment-friendly goodies and giveaways for students. We made our way to 13th Street Station tapped on and waited 5 short minutes before the train arrived. The ride was a short one as we were only 3 stops away from 34th Street Station. We hopped off and made our way to campus.
We walked for about a minute before we landed on Drexel territory. We set up our table and in a matter of no time, students were gathering around for information and free basil garden kits.
Some students asked, “what is SEPTA doing to help the environment”? We told them all about our climate change initiatives and how SEPTA has committed to transitioning away from diesel-powered buses. Our plan is for a full transition to zero-emission buses (ZEBs) by the year 2040.
When the event was over, we packed up our table and made our way back to the office.
The cost to ride the Market-Frankford Line, no matter the starting point, is $2.00 when utilizing Travel Wallet on your SEPTA Key card. The cost when using cash is $2.50 and must be exact change if paying the cashier or you can purchase a quick trip from a SEPTA Key fare kiosk.
I truly enjoyed myself at EarthFest. I enjoyed interacting with the students, sharing information about SEPTA, and being out in the beautiful weather.
