This Tuesday, SEPTA Key celebrates its first birthday— and what a first year it has been! On June 13, 2016, the first SEPTA Key was tapped. Since then, over 153,000 SEPTA Keys have been tapped, over 10 million trips have been taken, 432,000 reloads have occurred, and 42,000 cards have been registered. Wow! Now let’s take a look back on what this past year has been like for the Key:
June 13, 2016: It’s here! The SEPTA Key is finally here! SEPTA welcomed customers to purchase a SEPTA Key loaded with either a Weekly or Monthly TransPass. With just 10,000 cards available, these customers became known as “Early Adopters,” allowing them to experience the convenience of SEPTA Key first.
June 30, 2016: Just 17 days later, all 10,000 SEPTA Keys are sold out and in the hands of transit riders. These Early Adopters could continue to reload their card at 13 different transit stations across the system.
August 8, 2016: Riders can now buy or reload their SEPTA Key loaded with a TransPass at the sales office of any major transit terminal across the system.
November 14, 2016: The long-awaited Travel Wallet feature launches! Customers with the SEPTA Key could now reload their SEPTA Key with cash value, allowing them to pay as they go on transit.
November 18, 2016: 1,000 SEPTA Key cards with Travel Wallet are made available at SEPTA Headquarters.
February 9, 2017: All customers are invited to join the ranks of riders using SEPTA Key Travel Wallet! Starting at 69th Street Transportation Center, riders could purchase a SEPTA Key with the Travel Wallet.
March 27, 2017: Riders could now purchase their SEPTA Key with the Travel Wallet at any station along the Market-Frankford Line, Broad Street Line, or major bus loop.
June 1, 2017: The sale of paper TransPasses and One Day Convenience Passes ends. Now passes must be loaded on the SEPTA Key, giving riders benefits like balance protection and online reload.
June 13, 2017: Happy Birthday SEPTA Key! With such an exciting and successful first year, we’re looking forward to many more birthdays to come!
