SEPTA’s popular Holiday Decorated Vehicles [aka FESTIBUSES] can now be enjoyed year round, with a new limited-edition calendar on sale at the SEPTA Transit Store.
The store has extended hours for holiday shopping this week and next. The Transit Gift Store is normally open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 10am to 3pm but this week and next you can also shop on Tuesday [12/14 & 12/21] and on Friday 12/17 the store will stay open until 4pm to accommodate holiday shopping.
A hot item this year is the first-ever “Holiday Vehicle Competition” calendar, which features photos of decorated buses and trolleys in recent years.
A total of 2,000 calendars were printed and funds raised from sales will go back to employee participants to recoup the cost of decorations and props purchased for the vehicles.
The calendar costs $10 and is available exclusively at the SEPTA Transit Store located in the lobby at 1234 Market Street in Center City.
Background: SEPTA Trolley Operator Gary Mason, a 35-year veteran of SEPTA who works out of SEPTA’s Callowhill District, has been decorating his trolley for more than a decade, inspiring other SEPTA employees to do the same with their buses and trolleys.
Decorating vehicles became so popular with fellow employees and the community, that an annual tradition to compete against other employees from different Districts began. SEPTA’s frontline staff which includes transportation and maintenance employees at various districts work as a team to transform a transit vehicle into a spectacular holiday vision. The competition has evolved over the years to become the Authority’s largest internal and external event and this year two of the holiday buses were featured in the first-ever Visit Philly Holiday Parade!
