SEPTA is currently operating 25 battery-electric buses out of Southern District. The buses serve Routes 29 and 79, which previously were operated with trackless trolleys and will now return to zero-emission technology with SEPTA’s first foray into battery-electric technology. The purchase of the 25 battery-electric buses, manufactured by Proterra, Inc., was funded in part by a $2.6 million Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant under the “Low or No-Emission Program.” Combined with 38 trackless trolleys in North and Northeast Philadelphia, SEPTA now has the largest zero-emission bus fleet on the U.S. East Coast.
