Earth Week 2020

April 20, 2020

In 1970, tens of thousands of Philadelphians showed up to express their desire for greater protections for people and the environment. Overall, 20 million people across the United States participated.

Transit is inherently sustainable as a transportation mode by shifting transportation away from private automobiles, providing congestion relief, and supporting dense, compact land uses. By reducing the number of single-occupancy vehicles on the road, SEPTA’s services simultaneously provide congestion relief and reduce idling time in high-traffic conditions. Additionally, SEPTA’s high-capacity service produces what is known as the “multiplier effect,” which increases density and reduces dependence on private vehicle use.

SEPTA reduces greenhouse emissions by lessening private auto use and congestion, and supporting compact, energy efficient development. SEPTA also engages in its own internal sustainability efforts to deepen its environmental dividend. Learn more here.

April 22, 2020 marks the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day 🌏 and although we need to celebrate differently this year, there are still ways to plug in and go green! Click here for the Greenworks Phila blog to learn more about #EarthWeekPHL including virtual events, activities, and resources.

The biggest lesson of Earth Day is that when we come together, the impact can be monumental. Going green involves making small changes that add up to making a big difference. Commit to earth-friendly acts, make more sustainable choices, reduce your carbon footprint, conserve energy and resources, collaborate on environmental projects in your community, vote for leaders committed to protect us and the environment, and share your acts of green to help educate and inspire others!

Protecting our environment today and helps to create a healthy, more sustainable future. Click here for a few (25!) simple and easy tips to help you go green, protect the earth, save money and make every day Earth Day.

Our favorite tip: Carpool, ride your bike, use public transportation - like SEPTA! It's a fact - you reduce your carbon footprint by one pound for every mile you do not drive!

Whether you ride or not, public transportation benefits all of us - it reduces pollution, eases traffic congestion, and helps our communities thrive.

But doing any one of these things makes for a brighter future and again - small changes add up to a big difference.
