Amtrak and SEPTA need to perform final construction and cutover for the new at-grade connection between Amtrak's "Paxon" Interlocking and SEPTA's "Jeff" Interlocking. With this new connecting track, outbound trains to Cynwyd will no longer use the 52nd Street "jump over" bridge to cross Amtrak's Philadelphia-Harrisburg Line. This jump over, constructed by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1903, has reached its useful life. The Cynwyd Access Project will allow SEPTA to maintain outbound Cynwyd Line service by creating a new at-grade connection.
Due to the magnitude of work and track, signal, and catenary changes for both SEPTA and Amtrak, this cutover work cannot be conducted on the weekends or during normal train operations or the short-owl windows each night, which necessitates the use of weekday busing the entire Cynwyd Line.
Buses will replace ALL Cynwyd Line trains beginning Friday, 6/2 and continuing through the end of the service day, Friday, 6/9.
