This week we are exploring the Route 66. SEPTA’s Route 66 is a trolleybus, or trackless trolley, Route in Northeast Philadelphia. It connects the Market–Frankford Line at Frankford Transportation Center to Wissinoming, Mayfair, Holmesburg and Torresdale along Frankford Avenue.
The trackless trolleys are different from regular trolleys because they don’t run on a track. Instead, they utilize typical SEPTA buses that get their power from overhead wires via trolley poles.
SEPTA has two other trackless trolley Routes, the 59 and 75. Diesel buses temporarily replaced trackless trolleys on Route 66 in June 2002 because of reconstruction of Frankford Depot garage, but trackless service was restored in April 2008.
On a typical weekday SEPTA’s Route 66 carries 10,025 passengers and travels 2,184 miles. The Route 66 is always on the go – running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!
