Route of the Week - 37

December 12, 2016

This week’s Route of the Week is SEPTA Bus Route 37. The Route 37 travels between Broad & Snyder in South Philadelphia and Chester Transportation Center. The Route 37 is one of three SEPTA bus routes that services Philadelphia International Airport, along with the Routes 108 and 115.

On a typical weekday, the Route 37 will carry 3,894 passengers and make 113 trips. It’s one-way route average distance is 18.4 miles long. The Route 37 is one of 27 SEPTA routes that provide Nite Owl Service, running 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Before it became a bus route in 1955, the Route 37 was a streetcar line. This trolley service was known by its nickname, “The Chester Short Line” and ran from Chester via Essington Avenue. During World War II, the Route 37 brought thousands of Philadelphia workers to industry jobs at Westinghouse, Baldwin Locomotive Works, Sun Shipbuilding, and elsewhere along the Delaware River waterfront and Chester.

On June 21, 1981, Route 37 bus service was introduced to Eastwick Industrial Park to serve the employees of the center. Later, on September 3, 2006, service was introduced to Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino & Racetrack.

Whether you're headed around town or out of town, hop the Route 37 and let SEPTA do the driving!
