This week we are exploring SEPTA’s Route 29, a former streetcar route and trolley bus (or trackless trolley) line. This Route runs between Gray's Ferry and Pier 70 along the Delaware River. Route 29 was a streetcar line until 1950 and a trolley bus line until 2003.
SEPTA’s Route 29 runs along Morris and Tasker Streets in South Philadelphia, making it an easy Route for connection to the Broad Street Line at Tasker-Morris Station. The Route 29 also connects with SEPTA’s Route 45 for easy access to East Passyunk, Center City and a free transfer to the Route 23 to Chestnut Hill.
Starting in 2017, the Route 29 [and Route 79] will be home to 25 of SEPTA’s newest buses, the Proterra Catalyst, which is a battery-electric hybrid bus. This Route was chosen because of its short length and flat terrain. To read more about this bus and why we are so excited for its debut click here.
On a typical weekday, SEPTA’s Route 29 carries 4,798 passengers and travels 641 miles.
