Colombian-American R&B singer Kali Uchis will be at The Met on May 6 as part of the tour for her newest album Red Moon In Venus. The project is her first long-form release since the 2020 Grammy-nominated Spanish album Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios). It’s single “Telepatía” made Uchis the first woman to go No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Songs chart in almost a decade.
Red Moon In Venus was released last month via Geffen Records, and the central theme of the 15-track project is love and all its forms. In a recent press release, Uchis said "[the album] is a timeless, burning expression of desire, heartbreak, faith, and honesty, reflecting the divine femininity of the moon and Venus.” She noted: "This body of work represents all levels of love — releasing people with love, drawing love into your life and self-love.”
Uchis' flushing out of the positive and negative aspects of love on the album is done in a way that’s not only engaging, but relatable. The funky Soul ballad "Blue" finds the singer second-guessing her relationship as she falls out of love with her significant other. While the up-tempo Trap&B track "Deserve Me" featuring Summer Walker, finds the duo proudly moving on from exes who didn’t value them.
Red Moon In Venus also demonstrates Uchis' versatility, continuing the genre-bridging that makes her music so distinct. Whether it's a 90s pop track like "Endlessly," or the psychedelic Tame Impala-esque "Moral Conscience," she’s able to convey the complex feelings of love through a variety of sounds.
Although the majority of Red Moon In Venus is in English, Uchis maintains the bilingual lyrical element seen on Sin Miedo. Her sultry voice croons in Spanish throughout "Hasta Cuando," "Como Te Quiero Yo," and "Moonlight." According to an interview with Vogue, Uchis started working on the album in 2018, alongside a primarily Spanish project that she plans on releasing later on.
"I make so many different genres. And obviously, singing between two languages, I didn’t want to limit myself. I ended up basically working on these two projects around the same time," she said.
Uchis will bring her musical adaptability to The Met's regal stage on May 6. The show will take place only a few weeks after her star-studded Coachella performance, as she continues to make a name as one of the most alluring live performers in R&B. Uchis will also be joined by up-and-coming British singer-songwriter RAYE, who's written for mega stars like Beyonce and John Legend. Her February album My 21st Century Blues received critical acclaim, charting throughout Europe, Australia, and the U.S. The sold-out show promises an immersive experience that will make attendees reflect on, and embrace, their experiences with love.
