2023 PARK(ing) Day

The number of parks throughout Philadelphia increases dramatically each year on the third Friday in September - when activists, artists, architects, and other citizens [like us!] transform metered parking spaces into temporary public parks.
Known as PARK(ing) Day - this annual event re-imagines the possibilities of 160 square feet of public space. The event celebrates parks and other public spaces in cities across the country and raises awareness of the need for more pedestrian-friendly spaces in our urban areas.
PARK(ing) Day was founded by Rebar - a San Francisco art and design studio - in 2005 to raise awareness of the need for green spaces in urban environments.
Philadelphia celebrated PARK(ing) Day for the first time in 2008 with over 25 installations for relaxing, cycling, creating art, education, and socializing. In the past - the parks have ranged from mini-mini golf courses, meeting areas, landscape rest zones, public displays of art, and some more experimental installations.
SEPTA supports the concept behind PARK(ing) day by reducing the number of cars on our roadways, and associated congestion, emissions, and public space dedicated to car parking. In advance of SEPTA’s Micromobility Playbook later this month - our parklet will feature a bus bicycle rack practice station where riders can practice loading their bicycle onto the bus racks that are on the front of all SEPTA buses and trackless trolleys.

So join us this Friday, September 15, 2023 for PARK(ing) Day PHL! We'll be at 1234 Market Street from 8AM-5PM. Right in front of SEPTA Headquarters!
